This is the unique original Gouache painting by Severino Baraldi.

In 1572, Queen Elizabeth bids farewell to the first contingent of English volunteers, off from Greenwich, to aid the Dutch fight for liberty against the Spanish.

In a piece of characteristic daring (see inset) English volunteers smuggled themselves into Spanish-held Breda, surprised the guards and opened the town gates to the Dutch forces. A long and costly siege had been avoided.

This is the original artwork for illustration on pages 16-17 of Look and Learn issue no 951 (12 April 1980).
