This is the unique original Watercolour painting by Ralph Bruce.

Waltheof was the last Anglo-Saxon Earl in England. He was found guilty of treason against the Norman King William the Conqueror.

Despite having been popular in the Norman King's court he was too popular with the English who continued to oppose William for years after he assumed the throne.

The executioner, fearing Waltheof would be rescued, lost his patience with his victim's prayers and chopped of his head while he was still saying The Lord's Prayer.
