President Nasser of Egypt nationalized the Suez canal in 1956 in order to use the profits raised from taxing shipping that used it to build the Aswan Dam. Although Britain and the USA initially agreed to help finance the project Nasser's anti-Western stance turned matters.

The British and French considered a military solution. Here we have British Prime Minister Anthony Eden, American Secretary John Foster Dulles and the Australian leader Robert Menzies who attempted to negotiate with Nasser.
