The Defence of Corunna refers to a battle of the Peninsular War. On January 16, 1809, a French army under Marshal Soult attacked the British under Sir John Moore. The British had retreated across northern Spain following the defeat of the Spanish and their allies in the campaign and were attempting to embark on ships and return to England.

The retreat of the British, closely followed by their French pursuers, took them through mountainous terrain, in dreadful conditions of cold and snow and was marked by exhausting marches, privation, and suffering. On the march between Astorga and Betanzos the British army lost 3,000 men with 500 more left in hospitals.

The British forces eventually repulsed a French attack on the port of Corunna and were able, though under fire to embark onto the Navy ships waiting in the harbour, despite the loss of their Commander Sir John Moore.
