This is the unique original Watercolour painting by Ron Embleton.

One of the first seaman to be called a pirate and feared by the Spanish bullion ships, here he is seen being knighted by Queen Elizabeth I.

Drake carried official letters from the English Government ordering him to attack the Spanish "enemy" vessels as he saw fit. So when the outraged Spanish Government called for the immediate execution of "El Drague" as a pirate, Queen Elizabeth boarded his vessel and knighted him "Sir Francis" instead - threatening to throw the Spanish ambassador into jail if he protested.

Original artwork for illustration on p28 of Look and Learn issue no 162 (20 February 1965) and also used in 'The Valiant Book of Pirates' in 1967. Professionally matted ready for framing.
