This is the Signed unique original Gouache painting by Wilf Hardy.

This painting shows Lieutenant-Commander J. G. D. Ouvry, D.S.O., R.N. inspecting and diffusing a German mine that landed in the Thames estuary near Shoeburyness. This led to the discovery that the German mines had a magnetic device which would trigger the detonator when a magnetic force around the mine was altered by a ship passing overhead. With this new knowledge, the Admiralty decided to begin a ship de-magnetisation programme, which went on to save countless lives.

Hardy's vivid brush strokes help create a sense of mood and urgency in this painting, and his trademark camouflaged signature can be seen in the shadows in the sand at the base of the mine.

This original painting by Wilf Hardy was published in an article entitled 'Men and Machines: The Magnetic Monster' in Look and Learn no. 488 (22 May 1971).
